PEANUT BUTTER CLUB

Presents Artist Lily Simonson on Friday, June 22, at noon, in Redfield Auditorium, 45 Water St., Woods Hole. Lily will present her recent collaborations with WHOI researchers aboard the R/V Atlantis and E/V Nautilus. Her resulting paintings based on deep-sea geochemical seeps and hydrothermal vents comprise her newest exhibition, Lily Simonson: Painting the Deep, which opens June 30, 2018, at the Harvard Museum of Natural History. Lily works in tandem with researchers at remote field sites to create larger-than-life paintings of uncanny organisms in extreme environments--from the deep sea to Antarctica. Enveloping viewers in dramatic, atmospheric scenes, Simonson's work evokes the immersive experience of exploration. Simonson has served as the resident artist aboard five different oceanographic expeditions and spent three months scuba diving and camping in Antarctica as the 2014-15 National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists and Writers Awardee. Simonson holds a BA from UC Berkeley and an MFA in Painting from UCLA. Her works have been exhibited across the US and Europe and her art has appeared in a range of media outlets, including Interview Magazine, Atlas Obscuara, Pacific Standard, the LA Times, and LA Weekly. Sponsored by the Information Office. Coffee, tea, and cookies served. Donations accepted.
